I would like to oppose the mask mandate for ages 2-11 years by the Tri-County Health Department. The children were not mandated to be masked during our worst of the pandemic last year, and I believe it is only detrimental to their physical and mental health this year. Anyone who has a preschooler or toddler knows it is very difficult and unsanitary to mask them. Masks only encourage the spread of germs due to the chewing, licking, messing with the mask, sneezing into it, playing with it, and bringing their hands to their faces with this age group. Not to mention, so much learning occurs through facial recognition and awareness among their peers for preschoolers. If we consider the comments from elementary school teachers last year on the difficulty of keeping their students masked, I believe we are only further hampering learning time and social growth by masking our youngest. I humbly ask you to reconsider and leave the decision as to what is best for the students to the parents.

I would like the county commissioners to consider opting out of the TCHD mask mandate in favor of giving the control to the local board of directors that governs the school. The school board for each district has a comprehensive body of evidence to evaluate what is the best decision for their individual district. This includes guidance from TCHD on recent COVID cases in the district. A one size fits all approach should not be taken. The Board also has a body of evidence to understand how the mandate impacts the highest risk students such as ELL, special education and other at risk youth. Masks may inhibit the learning environment for these higher risk populations so it is imperative that all the data be considered for a mask mandate decision. This is why it is imperative the Commissioners opt-out of the mask mandate, as Douglas and Arapahoe counties have, and leave the decision in the hands of the local Board of Education.

During the emergency pandemic our children were not masked. This is not healthy, ups the chances of child trafficking. If our children were fine during a state of emergency, they will definitely be fine now. Absolutely not, my child will not be masked. If you wanna use a face shield fine but you will not make my child invisible. My perfectly healthy child. Please save the children. Thus is not saving them.
